Acne & Pigmentation treatment

ACNE & PIGMENTATION … A common problem

Acne is a skin condition characterized by red pimples on the skin, especially on the face, due to inflamed or infected sebaceous glands and prevalent chiefly among adolescents. Acne is a multi factorial disease. It affects genetically predisposed persons having androgen excess or increased affinity of androgen to receptors. Acne is not dangerous but treatment of acne is necessary because in long run they produce pigmented spots and scars which may be permanent.

How common is acne?

Dermatologists (skin specialists) say that approximately three-quarters of 11 to 30 year-olds will get acne at some time. Acne can affect people of all races and all ages. It most commonly affects adolescents and young adults, although there are people in their fifties who still get acne. Although acne affects both men and women, young men suffer from acne for longer – probably because testosterone, which is present in higher quantities in young men.

What causes acne?

Nobody is completely sure what causes acne. Experts believe the primary cause is a rise in androgen levels – androgen is a type of hormone. Androgen levels rise when a human becomes an adolescent. Rising androgen levels make the oil glands under your skin grow; the enlarged gland produces more oil. Excessive sebum can break down cellular walls in your pores, causing bacteria to grow.

Some studies indicate that susceptibility to acne could also be genetic. Some medications which contain androgen and lithium may cause acne. Greasy cosmetics may cause acne in some susceptible people. Hormone changes during pregnancy may cause acne to either develop for the first time, or to recur.

What are Acne Scars?

Acne scars are the result of inflammation within the dermis brought on by acne. The scar is created by the wound trying to heal itself resulting in too much collagen in one spot. Physical acne scars are often referred to as “ice pick” scars. This is because the scars tend to cause an indentation in the skin’s surface.

Ice pick scars: These are the most common and a classic sign of acne scarring with deep pits in the skin.

Box car scars: Angular scars that usually occur on the temple and cheeks, and can be either rolling scars that give the skin a wave-like appearance or Hypertrophic scars which are thickened.

What is Pigmentation?

The Pigmentation (melanin) of your skin is produced by special pigment cells called Melanocytes. Each person has the same number of these Melanocytes in our skin, approximately 60,000 per square inch.

Melanin is produced as small, insoluble granules. Where there are no melanin granules, the skin is white, whereas the more melanin granules, the darker the skin. The variations of particular skin colour – tan, brown, black – depend upon the concentration of these granules in the epidermis.

Most skin pigmentation disorders occur because the body produces either too much or too little melanin. The most common cause of excessive skin pigmentation is an increased e pills, sun exposure or combinations of these factors.

What treatments we offer at RIVA LASER MEDICAL CENTER for Acne?

Silk peel is a Pore Clarifying System, a specially designed machine use to treat your skin. It uses a patented technology called “Dermal infusion” which is only truly found with Silk Peel. This is a process of using an abrasive tip to remove the top micro-layers of the skin and at the same time, infuse an active ingredient deep into the skin tissue where it can really work.

The Silk Peel machine available at RIVA LASER MEDICAL CENTER has an advanced hand-piece that is different from traditional Silk Peel technology, and especially designed to treat acne and skin pigmentation.

It uses a medical grade disposable nylon brush tip that is very effective at breaking up the comedonal plug that is blocking your pore – the bristles get right into that plug and break it up. As it does, there is a closed loop vacuum that pulls those comedones up and out of your skin, along with the excess sebum, oils and other impurities that are aggravating your acne condition. And the final piece of the puzzle is solved as the pneumatic pressure of that closed loop system infuses a salicylic solution right down to the base of the pores where it can really go to work eliminating the acnes where they have been living and thriving.

Cosmo peels are our deepest peel and are TCA peels. They are quick and comfortable treatment that requires no downtime. Each Cosmo peel includes 4 peel sessions done in the clinic and just some
Home care needed to achieve and maintain best results. Each peel is spaced 2 weeks apart and takes approx 20 mins.

These peels are ideal for people with acne scarring, wrinkles, thin or frail skin, sagging skin, pigmentation or deep sun damage. People who have a “smoker’s skin” or “leathery skin” from sun damage should look at Cosmo peels.

Milk peel is a simple procedure with a very low down-time. A rejuvenation peel is recommended for advanced signs of sun damage and ageing of the skin such as loss of elasticity, scars, wrinkles and a smoker’s complexion. It is also advised for the treatment of actinic skins and stretch marks. A session generally lasts 15-30 minutes and is made up of several steps. Your skin will look immediately refreshed but the real rejuvenating effect will come out progressively and your skin will become beautiful and soft. Therefore it is important to repeat the treatment at least four times every two weeks.

Because it is a rejuvenation peel, you can continue all your routine activities in between the sessions. Simply follow the few precautions your skin care specialist may advise.
