The Magical Way to Remove those Unsightly Veins.

Laser treatment for veins works by directing very strong bursts of light on to unwanted veins on your face and body that cause the vein to gradually fade and eventually disappear. Lasers are very direct and accurate and only affect the area being treated; as such they are a very safe modality of treatment. Its a noninvasive procedure and well tolerated. However, not all skin types and colors can be treated with lasers and the doctor would recommend the ideal candidate. The treatment is usually very quick and can be likened to the sensation of being flicked with an elastic band.

Am I a Candidate?

Ideal candidates for laser vein removal are those with spider or thread veins on the face or body, or varicose veins.

Before Treatment Discuss your expectations with the Doctor so he can address any concerns or questions you may have.

During Treatment A laser vein removal procedure involves the application of a topical anesthetic cream prior to treatment. You will then be required to wear eye protection glasses provided. During the treatment you may experience a slight stinging sensation when the flash of light is delivered to the treated area. The entire procedure may last 15-30 minutes depending on the type and extent of the skin problem treated. 1 – 5 treatment sessions may be required for optimum results at 4 to 6 week intervals.

Recovery Most patients will be able to return to work immediately following a laser vein removal procedure, during a more aggressive treatment as warranted and decided upon by the doctor, you may need to keep ice on the treated area for up to 24 hours. You should not engage in any vigorous physical activity for at least 72 hours. The treated are should be covered with sunblock (SPF 30 or greater) for a minimum of two weeks following treatment, if the face is the treatment area we recommend daily use of sunblock as part of your regular routine.

Benefits The development of lasers has allowed practitioners to treat spider or thread veins and varicose veins safely and effectively.

Risks and Complications Depending on the type of light treatment used and what area of your body you are having treated, some mild stinging or burning may be noticed during the procedure, and the area treated may feel hot for around 15 minutes after treatment. Most patients will experience some skin redness in the treated area which will fade over the next hour or so. Post-treatment risks and side effects can include skin discoloration and scaling that usually fades over a period of weeks.

  • If you have received laser vein removal on the face or legs, these areas will usually swell for up to 24 hours.
  • Your face or legs may look redder and appear to have small scratches. This usually subsides within 48 hours.
  • After 48 hours, the skin over the treated veins will look slightly red, purple, or bruised. Sometimes the veins will be more visible than they were prior to treatment. This is normal.
  • Within the first two to three weeks, the redness and purple color will begin to fade.
  • Each week, the color will become lighter and the veins will become less and less noticeable.
  • After six weeks, if any veins are still visible, a second laser vein removal will be required.
  • It is most important that you moisturize the treated area at least four times a day.  Simply apply a light film moisturizer or Vaseline. You must use moisturizer at least five days after your laser vein removal. Do not use moisturizers that may contain irritating products. Antibiotics are not recommended, as some patients will display skin sensitivity or allergic reaction to antibiotics.
  • After five days, if the skin has returned to normal, you may use a moisturizer that is dye, perfume, and fragrance free.
  • You should also cleanse the skin twice a day after laser vein removal. You may use a gentle cleanser. Pat rather than rub the skin dry and moisturize immediately after cleansing.
  • If by the second day after treatment your skin appears normal, you may use sunscreen (SPF 30 or greater). Of course, continue moisturizing several times per day.
  • Make-up may be applied 24 hours after the laser vein removal as long as there is no inflammation, irritation, or severe redness of the treated areas. If scabbing, blistering or crusting occurs, no make-up should be applied until these have cleared.
  • Working out, aerobic exercise, weight lifting, treadmills, and other strenuous activity should be delayed for 72 hours since activity may aggravate the treated area.
  • Patients should avoid excessive sun exposure for at least two weeks following laser vein removal.
  • If you have any swelling or discomfort in the treatment area, cold packs or cold compresses may be applied.
  • After laser vein removal, you should not do any of the following for two weeks:
  • Retin-A® or accutane , BOTOX® Cosmetic, Collagen, Glycolic products, Alpha hydroxy acid products,
  • Electrolysis, Waxing, Depilatories, Masks and facials, Chemical peels, Microdermabrasion, Exfoliating sponges
  • Tanning or tanning beds.
